The uses and benefit of Granular Activated Carbon

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC)

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is commonly used in aquariums for its filtration properties. It plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, healthy, and clear environment for aquatic life. Here’s a detailed look at the uses and benefits of GAC in aquariums:

Uses of Granular Activated Carbon in Aquariums:

Removing Toxins and Contaminants:

  • Chemical Contaminants: GAC helps remove harmful chemicals and toxins from the aquarium water, such as pesticides, heavy metals, and industrial chemicals, that may have entered the tank through water changes or food.
  • Organic Compounds: It adsorbs organic compounds like proteins, amino acids, and other dissolved organic matter that can contribute to poor water quality.

Improving Water Clarity:

  • Color and Odor Removal: GAC is effective at removing substances that cause discoloration and unpleasant odors in aquarium water, such as tannins from driftwood or decaying organic matter.
  • Preventing Cloudiness: By removing particulate matter and dissolved organics, GAC helps maintain crystal-clear water, creating a visually appealing environment.

Controlling Algae Growth:

  • Excess Nutrients Removal: GAC can help remove excess nutrients like phosphates and nitrates from the water. These nutrients, when present in high concentrations, can fuel algae growth, leading to algal blooms in the aquarium. By removing these nutrients, GAC helps to keep algae under control.

Absorbing Medications:

  • Post-Treatment Water Clarity: After using medications to treat fish diseases or parasites, GAC can absorb any remaining chemicals, ensuring that the water is safe for the fish after treatment is completed.

Improving Biological Filtration:

  • Supporting Beneficial Bacteria: While GAC does not provide a surface for biological filtration as ceramic media or bio-balls do, it can help enhance the overall filtration system. By keeping the water clean and removing excess waste, it creates an optimal environment for beneficial bacteria to thrive.

Benefits of Granular Activated Carbon in Aquariums:

Enhancing Water Quality:

  • GAC removes harmful substances like chlorine, chloramines, and organic pollutants, which improves the overall water quality and creates a healthier environment for fish and other aquatic life.

Promoting Fish Health:

  • By reducing the presence of toxic chemicals and maintaining optimal water conditions, GAC helps reduce the stress on fish, leading to better health, brighter colors, and longer lifespans.

Effective Filtration:

  • GAC provides an additional layer of filtration in the aquarium, removing not just visible particles but also dissolved organic substances and gases, improving the efficiency of the filtration system.

Aesthetic Appeal:

  • By clearing up the water, GAC ensures that your aquarium looks clean, with clear water, vibrant fish, and unobstructed views of plants, decorations, and the aquarium setup.

Cost-Effective Solution:

  • GAC is relatively inexpensive and easy to use. It can be replaced or regenerated over time, offering a cost-effective filtration solution without the need for complex or costly equipment.

Odor Control:

  • GAC can absorb excess organic material and other substances that lead to foul odors in the aquarium, keeping the tank smelling fresh and clean.

Long-Term Water Maintenance:

  • When used as part of a comprehensive filtration system, GAC helps maintain stable water parameters, reducing the frequency of water changes and making aquarium maintenance easier over time.

Things to Consider:

  • Limited Lifespan: Over time, GAC becomes saturated with contaminants and loses its effectiveness. It’s important to replace or regenerate GAC periodically to maintain optimal water quality.
  • Not a Complete Filtration Solution: GAC should be used in combination with mechanical and biological filtration methods, as it only adsorbs dissolved contaminants and does not physically filter out particles.
  • Impact on Certain Medications: GAC can absorb medications used to treat fish diseases, so it should be removed from the filter during treatments unless you specifically want to remove medications after their use.

Conclusion:

Granular Activated Carbon is an invaluable tool in aquarium maintenance. It helps keep the water clean, clear, and safe by removing harmful chemicals, improving water quality, and promoting the overall health of fish and other aquarium inhabitants. When used as part of an integrated filtration system, GAC enhances the environment for aquatic life and contributes to a more enjoyable aquarium experience.

Additional Information

What are Powdered Activated Carbon Products?

PAC products are the most widely accepted control technology in the potable water industry. They use activated carbon technology and have a small particle size, allowing them to be dosed at the head of the treatment plant and added directly to the water for contaminate removal.

Some of the benefits of using PAC products include:

  • Easy, cost effective and reliable selection method
  • Reduced operating costs
  • Minimal waste sludge
  • Conservation of resources
  • Superior water quality

ACTIVATED CHARCOAL

This food-grade Activated Charcoal is made from coconut shells. It is activated using high-pressure steam at high temperature, multiplying the pores in the charcoal and making it highly absorbent. Activated Charcoal can be used to assist in detoxing. It can be consumed in water and used as a paste for external applications or as toothpaste.

How to Use:

This activated charcoal can be used externally in a myriad of ways or consumed orally.  To use charcoal internally mix 1-2 heaped tbsps into enough water to make a slurry, then drink. Follow with a glass of freshwater. This mix can be consumed daily for up to a month as a detox, and then weekly.

Charcoal can also be added to a full glass of water, stirred and then left until the particles settle to the bottom. Drain off greywater and drink. The charcoal can be reused several times. It is recommended to wait 2 hours after consuming medication, supplements or food before taking charcoal, as it may affect the absorption of other substances. Mix charcoal with water into a thick paste to brush teeth with several times a week, alternating with your regular toothpaste.

Combine charcoal with freshly ground Linseeds or wet clay to make a poultice. It can be used for minor skin irritations, acne, sore joints, stings and bites. Apply to the affected area and cover with a clean cloth for several hours or overnight. Alternately, moisten a small amount of charcoal and apply to bites or the like with a band-aid.

Activated charcoal powder is also a very effective deodoriser. Leave some in an open dish or potpourri dish in the bathroom, or use in the kitchen to absorb strong smells. This charcoal is best stored in a non-plastic airtight container, as it may absorb residual odours or off-gassing pollutants.
