Ostracods, or ostracodes, are a class of the Crustacea (class Ostracoda), sometimes known as seed shrimp. Some 70,000 species (only 13,000 of which are extant) have been identified, grouped into several orders. They are small crustaceans, typically around 1 mm (0.039 in) in size, but varying from 0.2 to 30 mm (0.008 to 1.181 in) in the case of Gigantocypris. Their bodies are flattened from side to side and protected by a bivalve-like, chitinous or calcareous valve or "shell". The hinge of the two valves is in the upper (dorsal) region of the body. Ostracods are grouped together based on gross morphology. While early work indicated the group may not be monophyletic; and early molecular phylogeny was ambiguous on this front,  recent combined analyses of molecular and morphological data found support for monophyly in analyses with broadest taxon sampling.

Here are some important information for us human... and hence this apply to our loving shrimp.

Eat a rainbow

Fruit and vegetables fall into five different colour categories: red, purple/blue, orange, green and white/brown. Each colour carries its own set of unique disease fighting chemicals called phytochemicals. It is these phytochemicals that give fruits and vegetables their vibrant colour and of course some of their healthy properties.

What’s in a colour?

RED
Red fruits and vegetables are coloured by a natural plant pigment called lycopene. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that can help reduce the risk of cancer and keep our heart healthy.

PURPLE /BLUE
The plant pigment anthocyanin is what gives blue/purple fruits and vegetables their distinctive colour. Anthocyanin also has antioxidant properties that protect cells from damage and can help reduce the risk of cancer, stroke and heart disease.

ORANGE/YELLOW
Carotenoids give this group their vibrant colour. A well-known carotenoid called Betacarotene is found in sweet potatoes, pumpkins and carrots. It is converted to vitamin A, which helps maintain healthy mucous membranes and healthy eyes. Another carotenoid called lutein is stored in the eye and has been found to prevent cataracts and age-related macular degeneration, which can lead to blindness.

GREEN
Green vegetables contain a range of phytochemicals including carotenoids, indoles and saponins, all of which have anti-cancer properties. Leafy greens such as spinach and broccoli are also excellent sources of folate.

BROWN/WHITE
White fruits and vegetables contain a range of health-promoting phytochemicals such as allicin (found in garlic) which is known for its antiviral and antibacterial properties. Some members of the white group, such as bananas and potatoes, are also a good source of potassium.

Please enjoy!

Silkworm Pupae is acknowledged by Japanese breeders as the ultimate ingredient for feeding and for colour improvement of Koi, Silkworm Pupae have a unique type of protein and silk oil properties that koi can digest easily. Fed as a high protein food 'treat', these dried silkworm pupae are high in silk protein which enhances colour distinction and vibrancy.

Silkworm, has long been acknowledged by Japanese breeders as the Ultimate additive for growth, colour, white skin lustre, and body shape. Silk Worm Pupae has unique protein and silk oil properties that ornamental Koi & Goldfish can digest, that will increase & enhance colours, white skin pigmentation, gloss & improve body shape and growth.

Koi love the taste and Silkworm Pupae is ideal to supplement your Koi's diet in warm summer temperatures. You should not overfeed Silkworm Pupae - only give them what they need and what they are fighting for when you throw some onto the surface of the pond.

Silkworm Pupae is a proven HIGH QUALITY food for rapid growth and excellent skin quality. Silkworm Pupae is HIGH in unprocessed natural protein which is easily digested.

Silkworm Pupae is an excellent and powerful supplementary feed for koi. Made from the highest quality silkworm pupae, they are carefully dried out to retain all the goodness with no additives or preservatives included. This product is an ideal food due to it being rich in proteins. It not only increases the growth rate of your koi but also enhances the colours. Silkworm pupae can be fed as a daily 'treat' or as a power food at maximum of 30% of total food volume. Due to the high protein and fat content values, it is recommended not to feed below temperatures of 15C/59F. To improve the digestion ability of your koi further, put the pupae in warm water for half an hour before use.

The Benefits of Silkworm in Fish Feed

Silkworm are the caterpillar of several moth species that are used to produce silk. When they begin their pupa phase, a silkworm encases itself in raw silk. The entire pupa is then harvested and boiled to separate the silk from the cocoon. In this process, the spent pupae are considered a waste material but they have been captured by Eastern cultures for some time to be used in a range of applications like industrial oil production, fertilizers, livestock feed, or even human food.

For centuries, Japanese Koi breeders have been using silkworm pupae as a natural food to help Koi gain weight more rapidly. This is because silkworms are one of the healthiest feeder insects around, containing very little fat and high levels of calcium, protein, and various B vitamins. These properties help Koi and other fish, not only grow at a faster rate, but also help to improve the luster and shine of their scales.

Including silkworm pupae in a fish diet is a great way to simulate the type of nutrient dense variety that Koi would experience if they were kept in mud pond or other fish might find in the wild. If you think about it, a fish in the wild graze on a wide variety of edible plants, algaes and insects throughout the day. In order to replicate that varied food source in a tank or pond, including some other nutrient sources, like silkworm pupae, is a great idea.

While there are a number of different silkworm pupae options available on the market, Hikari manufactures a unique product which is processed and packaged to avoid oxidation, a common issue with competitive silkworm pupae type products. This fresher and more potent delivery system of for these nutrients help your fish avoid potential health problems from too much of a good thing or rancidity. Our formula is also tried and tested to offer a flavor that Koi enjoy as some can be finicky eaters with a taste for the finer things mother nature has to offer.

Check out Silkworm Dust– a great way to introduce this ancient nutrient booster to your tank or pond pets.

We planted our own organic mulberry tree for snail, shrimp & aquatic pets.

 From

The Shivaji University (SU) zoology department has developed a fish food from mulberry leaves to better the immune system of this aquatic creature.

The department plans to involve farmers and women self-help groups (SHGs) in future.

Associate professor Madhav Bhilave and the students’ team of Sayara Nadaf, Sukhda Bhosale and Vaishali Nalawde have developed the food in three months, under the guidance of the department head, GP Bhavane.

Speaking to DNA, Bhilave said, “This food is useful for herbivorous and freshwater fishes.”

“The mulberry leaves contain protein, water, sugar and soluble carbohydrates,” he said. Laboratory trials show the food helps in improving the immune system of fishes. “A strong immune system is important in fish farming as fishes succumb to various diseases in their earlier life stages,” he said.

Mulberry leaves full of nutritious vitamins, including vitamin A (beta-carotene), B1 and B2. They are also a great source of minerals such as magnesium, iron, and zinc, along with essential electrolytes such as sodium and potassium. The many carbohydrates and fibers make the mulberry leaves part of a varied diet.

Use the dried mulberry leaves as an organic, vitamin-rich treat to promote successful scaling (shedding) and scale growth for all types of shrimp.

Mulberry leaves generally have about 43% of Carbohydrates, 25% Fat, 24% of Protein, and 6% Fiber.

Mulberry leaves dosage

Use about one to two leaves per 10 gallons or 40 liters.

We planted our own organic Cherry guava tree for snail, shrimp & aquatic pets.

 From  internet

Guava leaves

Guava leaves are the ideal supplement for freshwater shrimp and other invertebrates. Guava leaves have an antibacterial effect against worms, infections, and bacteria that cause diseases. It works in preventing the Vibrio bacterium that is the cause of many shrimp diseases. In many ways, they are similar to Catappa leaves only tougher and will take longer to decay. They are a good source of natural food for shrimp, dwarf lobsters, snails, and small catfish (pleco’s).

Tip: pouring over with boiling water ensures that the leaves will sink faster.
